Sur : Visit the Dhow factory! (Oman)

Most travelers in Oman pass the city of Sur while on their way to Ras Al Jinz/ Ras Al Hadd (Turtle watching).
Did you know you could visit a Dhow (wooden boat – symbol in Oman) factory in Sur? Come have a look!

IMGP0032During my second road-trip in Oman, I absolutely wanted to go and see the Green Turtles at Ras Al Jinz. After getting lost trying to find the Bimmah Sinkhole, hungry and tired, we decided to stop at the first restaurant in sight (see below : restaurant tips).

While sitting and enjoying the amazing view at the restaurant terrace, a local Omani engaged the conversation and told us about the Dhow factory in Sur, that we shouldn’t miss it. Having nothing scheduled but reaching Ras Al Hadd by the end of the afternoon, we decided to give it a try. 🙂

It is an interesting place. We had the opportunity to see some wood workers in action. Do not expect some kind of museum – touristic like place. It is a real factory where they actually build Dhows by hand.

It is quite a small place so expect to spend about 30min – 1hour there.

Restaurant tips in Sur

The restaurant were we ended up randomly is actually a very good place with an awesome view. It has a large terrace with a view over the sea and the fisherman’s harbor.
Food is cheap and tasty!

I don’t remember the name of the place but it is located near the main road (see map below).
